Symptoms of a Failing AC Compressor
Living in North Palm Beach, FL means dealing with long, hot summers and warm, humid winters. Your air conditioner works hard to maintain indoor comfort, and all the cooling cycles may lead to an unexpected AC compressor failure. If you notice any of these symptoms of a failing AC compressor, you’ll need to arrange for professional repair services.
System Blows Warm Air
One of the earliest signs of AC compressor failure is when the system blows warm air. According to the Department of Energy, this happens when the compressor, which acts as a pump, can no longer push the refrigerant through the evaporator and condenser coils. You may also notice that your electricity bill goes up, despite you not adjusting the thermostat settings. This happens because the thermostat keeps signaling the system to run more cooling cycles, but the system can’t produce enough cold air to satisfy the temperature setting.
Circuit Breaker Trips
Most central cooling systems have their own breaker. When AC compressor failure is imminent, the system will trip the breaker. The compressor attempts to draw too much current, and the breaker cuts off the electricity to prevent an overload.
Outdoor Unit Shakes or Vibrates
A failing AC compressor may have trouble starting. This is called a hard start. A hard start makes the unit shake or vibrate. This vibration creates a lot of noise. Hard starts often happen immediately before the compressor fails. Turn the air conditioner off and wait for a service technician to perform professional repair services.
System Doesn’t Turn On
Newer air conditioners have enhanced safety systems. If the air conditioner’s fan moves, but the outdoor unit’s compressor won’t turn on, AC compressor failure may have already occurred. Power the system off and wait for a service technician to diagnose the problem.
